Innovation policy engine for cultural and creative industries launched in Barcelona

Team, a consortium of 17 partners comprising universities, cities and businesses, aims to establish a partner- and network-driven innovation policy engine.
The objective is to promote open innovation as standard, while continuously formulating and adopting recommendations for policy development in Europe's various cultural and creative industries.
Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth, project manager for EIP at Lund University, was invited as a keynote speaker at the Spanish Presidency High Level Conference on Cultural and Creative Industries. She highlighted the crucial role of cultural and creative competences in achieving success in the green and digital transition:
“This kind of expertise plays a crucial role in creating radically new solutions to complex societal challenges,” says Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth, project manager for EKIP.
Ekip will collect policy areas from stakeholders across Europe, prioritize them and select five per year to be taken through ekip's policy engine. The EKIP Observatory will communicate the work performed, including the resulting policy recommendations as well as recommendations for implementing these areas to drive innovation in urban ecosystems.
“We need new policies that allow financing and access to facilities and demolition labs for different types of projects. The interaction between knowledge, business, research and society is crucial to solving Europe's problems,” says Charlotte Lorentz Hjorth.
The cultural and creative industries include architecture, fashion, design, audiovisual production, cultural heritage, publishing and visual arts, among others. The EU recognises the importance of cultural and creative industries and highlights their economic contribution, which accounts for 4.4% of EU GDP in 2019 and generates an export surplus of over €8.6 billion. Cultural and creative industries also play a critical role in job creation, with 7.6 million jobs, particularly for young people.
