At the Unexpected — Arts and science innovation forum - to be held at Mejeriet on June 4, it will be possible to step right into the exciting process of some ongoing innovation portfolios. One such example is the work of creating the conditions for attending live concerts from home, where you can choose the camera angle, cut and zoom, but also the sound quality, for example if you want to focus on the sound of a special instrument or if you want to sit in a special place in the salon. Jesper Larsson from Malmö Opera leads the unique collaboration between academia, the cultural sector and industry and will give an insight into the innovation work during Unexpected.

The work to develop a solution for how the user can control their live music experience has been ongoing for a few years. The activities in the field are organised in an innovation portfolio, so that together they lead to transformation — both through what is done in project form and what needs to be supplemented to bring about the complete change. It is not enough, for example, to create a good way of recording, but it also requires that the transmission technology works, that the environment in which users can make their choices is appealing and transparent, and that the laws governing the rights of both practitioners and users are in place. Involved stakeholders from academia, the cultural sector and industry worked together in many different contexts and constellations.

During Unexpected, Jesper Larsson comes from Malmo Opera to give a presentation of what has been done within the portfolio and how to plan to move forward.

- There will also be opportunities to be part of a smaller group where we discuss the innovation methodology we have used and what it is like to work with the public sector, industry and academia in a common innovation landscape, says Jesper Larsson.

What has been done in the collaboration? Developing the technology to record and broadcast concerts has obviously been an important part. Because how can you reproduce sound and image in a good way and how do you sync it to a material that can be broadcast and selected? Among other things, the participants have collaborated in workshops to develop how technologies from several different suppliers can work together to create an experience with the possibility of individual choice for the user. An example was when Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony was recorded with the Malmö Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra at Malmö Live last spring. This was done using 176 microphones in five different recording techniques, six Axis cameras and a 360° camera. In the spring of 2025, they were testing to broadcast to several users at the same time. In April, 45 simultaneous users were tested and then tested to have a couple hundred users simultaneously when streaming audio and video from La Boheme from Malmö Opera in early May. This is done, among other things, to see how the company Cinfos the software is affected by having many computer users at the same time. On April 25, a workshop was held with Region Skåne on user perspectives from artist, audience and promoter and possible business opportunities.

Concert X is a project that is also part of the portfolio. The project examines the legal conditions and challenges of digital live broadcasting. Here we discuss from as many perspectives and stakeholders as possible, such as those of the artist and the user.

The day before Unexpected (on June 3), a mobile streaming platform will be tested. The ambition is to put together an easily removable equipment with mobile camera, broadcast rack, audio mixer and connection to 5G to be able to broadcast from almost any location. Malmö Opera's performance of 'Falstaff — opera on a truck' will be broadcast from a square to nursing homes around Skåne. Link to workshop.

You are from the cultural sector and run a technology-oriented innovation project. What is the biggest challenge with this?

- I am used to the fact that I can define or determine the answer to my questions in what I am home with, says Jesper Larsson. For example, when it comes to data consumption and data streams, I depend on experts coming in, but a dilemma is that sometimes I can't tell which expert has the most control. Coordinating, planning work packages, and managing resources in projects with advanced technology is more difficult.

In order for the multidisciplinary group with a large mix of competences to function, frequent reconciliations and coordination meetings are organised with companies, academia and public sector organisations.

- It is important that we know how to work to inform each other but also be able to benefit from the lessons that we make. It is also important to highlight the work that Future by Lund stands for, from the launch of a pilot to the launch of the innovation portfolio work. I think it is important to illustrate the importance of Future by Lund by showing how the innovation platform makes it work and happen.
