GIID analyzes the role of land in innovation districts

Published
April 16, 2024
What is the importance of land use governance for the Innovation District? In the spring of 2024, The Global Institute on Innovation Districts (GIID) released the report “Innovation districts and the Centrality of Land” which addresses the importance of land in achieving ambitions in an innovation district.

Future by Lund is a member of The Global Institute on Innovation Districts (GIID). In April 2024, their latest research paper came out, “Innovation districts and the centrality of land”. It explores the central role of land in transforming innovation districts and how specific ambitions can be achieved through land use governance. Some examples of such ambitions can be to attract talent, to make the district more inclusive, to create more accommodation options or to promote research & development specialisations.

The report is based on experiences from many different innovation districts -- according to GIID's estimates, about 150 districts have emerged in recent decades. Last June, GIID released the report “Why Governance Matters,” which identified seven factors that contribute to effective governance, and one the seven factors is about tying ground to governance which is thus the focus this time.

How does Lund work with its innovation district? Lund University and Lund Municipality have commissioned Future by Lund and partners to catalyze the work to co-create Lund as an international innovation district. The work is done, among other things, to enable us in Lund to increase our capacity to solve complex and shared challenges. The work is based on a steering group consisting of Anders Almgren, Chairman of Lund Municipal Board, Pia Kinhult, ESS and Kristina Eneroth, Vice Rector at Lund University.
