Electrification of urban transport

The Electrification of City Transportation portfolio focuses on various solutions to replace internal combustion engines with electricity-based alternatives. This is not just a matter of changing the propulsion technology itself but is a shift that needs to take place from a systems perspective. There are various possibilities with charging infrastructure, electric roads, integration and combination of charging/storing electricity in real estate, new vehicle types and applications both for private vehicles, public transport, work vehicles and logistics operators. The focus is not only on technology but also on business models, infrastructure, capabilities as well as policies to promote such development in the city.

The Electrification of City Transportation portfolio focuses on various solutions to replace internal combustion engines with electricity-based alternatives. It is not just a matter of changing the propulsion technology itself, but is also a shift from a systems perspective. The activities in this portfolio have focused in particular on contributing to the testing and development of an electric road concept operated by Elonroad AB.

Varför?

A large part of electrification is solved by increasing the use of batteries in vehicles and expanding the city's charging infrastructure. By also introducing electric roads, we can reduce the need for batteries and also charge vehicles while they are driving.

Electric road IV: Extension of Evolution road

For the past three years, the Evolution Road project has carried out electric road tests at Getingvägen I Lund. The Swedish Transport Administration has now decided to extend the project period by another two years.

The fourth of June 2020 was a historic day in Lund — when the electric road on Getingvägen was inaugurated. Over the next two years, the Evolution Road project will test charging electric vehicles on the go. Charging by road saves time and can allow electric vehicles to run on smaller batteries. In the long run, this could mean reduced emissions from Swedish transport.

Electric road II - a detailed plan is developed

The Swedish Transport Administration grants Phase 2 of Elvägen — and grants the project 1 million in grants to develop a more detailed plan. Elvägen is a project in Lund where it is intended that electric vehicles will be charged on the fly via rails on the roadway. Now the project is one step closer to being realized. ‍

Elvägen I - Test bed Örtofta

In Örtofta, north of Lund, a test track was built to test how electric vehicles can charge the electric car during the journey. The idea was to be able to connect to the system on the fly and that with the new charging system you could have smaller batteries and still drive longer distances without having to stop.
