Electric road IV: Extension of Evolution road
For the past three years, the Evolution Road project has carried out electric road tests at Getingvägen I Lund. The Swedish Transport Administration has now decided to extend the project period by another two years.
At Getingvägen, two variants of the same technology have been tested, a rail on top of the roadway suitable for city traffic and a rail milled into the asphalt and adapted for road traffic and higher speeds. It is mainly the technology of road traffic that will be the focus during the extension. Another important element will be the dissemination of knowledge, since the pandemic has previously stopped many who wanted to come and visit the facility.
The Electric Road Project is extended for two years, starting in 2022 and running until the summer of 2024. The goal is to create more knowledge about electric roads, which will be an important contribution to achieving a fossil-free electrified transport system.
Electric roads are a charging infrastructure that allows vehicles to charge while driving. In Lund, electric vehicles are being tried to be charged from below via a rail. The electric road being tested in the Evolution Road project is a conductive terrestrial solution, which means that the vehicle has direct contact with the charging rails on the road via a pantograph. Charging can take place both while driving and at a standstill and works with most electric vehicles, such as passenger cars, buses or trucks. The technology is developed by the Swedish company Elonroad AB in collaboration with Lund University of Technology. Read more about the project at www.evolutionroad.se.
From Evolution Road's press release:
“We have come a long way, and with this announcement we can go even further. We will continue with tests of Elonroad's electric road technology and collect even more important knowledge, not least in terms of high power outputs, road maintenance in different climates and prepare and ensure that the system is sustainable for large-scale use,” says Per Löfberg, project manager at Innovation Skåne in the press release.
“We at Trafikverket are very pleased with the results so far and therefore choose to extend the project. This means that more vehicle types can be tested and in-depth tests carried out to ensure that the technology is ripe for launch,” says Jan Pettersson, Program Manager Electrification at the Swedish Transport Administration.
The Evolution Road electric road project is a collaboration between nine actors from industry, universities and the public sector: Innovation Skåne AB (project manager), Elonroad AB, Kraftringen Energi AB, Lund Municipality, Lund University of Technology, Ramboll, Skånetrafiken, Solaris Sverige AB and Statens väg- och transportforskning institute, VTI. The Swedish Transport Agency is the main financier.
