Ressource water

Water today is often handled as an infinite resource that is ultimately sent via wastewater treatment plants into a stream, lake or ocean. The idea is to try different solutions to better utilize water as a finite resource in the city. Through circular solutions, better management of qualities of water and intermediate storage of rainwater, water can become a resource for the future and not just something we want to get rid of. We see that both existing buildings and new construction areas need solutions in, for example, apartments, but also in and around the property.

Varför?

Access to water is essential to our daily lives. Changes in the climate, where extreme downpours combined with periods of drought mean that we need to find new solutions where we can recycle and reuse water but also cope with torrential downpours.

Siegel: Residential houses for water fans

How about a swim in a nature pool in the courtyard, a spa on a balcony overlooking the plain, or a bathtub in your own living room? All that can be found in the apartment building Det Goda Vatten, one of many sustainable apartment buildings on Brunnshög. In September 2022, the 61 apartments were occupied, and we got a preview of some of the innovations in the house. “We want to take advantage of the beauty of the water and use plants and water to convey ecology,” says architect Cord Siegel.

Aesthetic dams solve water problems at Brunnshög

Heavy rains can cause concern if the stormwater system is not adapted for large amounts of water. In Lund, the new Brunnshög area is being built, and there has been planning from the beginning for how the area will be able to cope with torrential rains and delay large amounts of water locally. Even before the area is completed, the parks with the system of ponds are ready to receive and purify the storm water — and at the same time the neighborhood becomes more attractive and the plants get a chance to establish themselves. Here Cornelia Wallner from VA SYD and Nina Lindegaard from Lund Municipality tell us about the facilities.

VA SYD: Källby Waterworks

‍ In the disused water plant at Källby in Lund, innovation companies, universities and operating companies try out the latest technology in measuring the quality of drinking water together. Since May 2021, Vinnova has been supporting a project to test how completely new sensors and measuring instruments work to see if they can help create a better business for water companies. A goal for Källby Vattenverkstad is to help ensure that more and more measurements can be made online in a cost-effective way.

VA SYD Rewaise

REWAISE is an innovation project with the goal of reducing the use of drinking water and using water in a smarter and more efficient way. In the project, solutions are tested, for example, in Brunnshög.

VA SOUTH: Together we make room for the water

How does society become more resilient and robust when it comes to torrential rain? VA SYD is investigating in the initiative Together we make room for the water how through collaboration we can improve the management of downpours in Malmö and Lund. The project also looks at increasing the reuse of water.
