At Future by Lund, we are constantly looking for new challenges, ideas and themes that contribute to change, innovation and sustainable development. The theme Ideas and Science for Society brings together new ideas, portfolios and projects. It can be about using biomass (as a raw material) in combination with bioprocess technology to create applications in different fields of application or using space technology to create more robust systems on Earth.

Varför?

New ways of thinking and new combinations can open up different solutions. By creating new biotechnological tools at a rapid pace and can be combined with data-based development, it quickly opens up new solutions that can create new societal values. In this way, it would be possible, for example, to replace fossil raw materials with new materials and replace animal protein with fermented protein.

Space node Syd/Space Hub Lund: Traveling to space takes time

Building skills and relationships in a new field takes a long time. This shows the purposeful work that Lund has done in the space area through the innovation platform Future by Lund and participating partners. Already in 2015, the topic was raised during an industry event and since then the work with Rymdnode Syd has intensified, all the while with a clear link to sustainability. In 2021, the work yielded a clear result, with ESA BIC Sweden opening a fourth space incubator in Ideon Innovation in Lund.

ESA BIC: Now Lund has a space incubator!

Now it is clear that Sweden's fourth ESA BIC (European Space Agency Business Incubaton Centre Sweden) will be located at Ideon Science Park in Lund. The announcement is welcomed by both Rymdstyrelsen and Lund Municipality. “It is very fun that Lund complements ESA BIC Sweden as one of a total of four space incubators in the national network. Southern Sweden is now also getting a space incubator and this is an important step to be able to support and highlight companies with space connectivity throughout Sweden. I see Lund and the other space incubators as a strength for Sweden's future development in space,” said Anna Rathsman, Director General of the Space Agency in Lund Municipality's press release.

Lundasupport during the pandemic

For many companies, the situation caused by COVID-19 was difficult to manage. On the initiative of the business department of Lund Municipality, Lundasupport was therefore started, which was a collaboration in which local companies were given the opportunity to get in touch with business advisers free of charge. In Lundasupport, Medicon Village, Ideon Science Park, Ideon Innovation, Smile Incubator, Lund University cooperated with LU Innovation & Venture Lab, Win, XPlot, Future by Lund, Cleantech Scandinavia, Handelsföreningen Lund and Lund Nybedrijkercentrum (LNC).

How does Lund's innovation ecosystem stand?

Lund is a centre for innovation and entrepreneurship. Lund's innovation ecosystem has now been analysed to provide an overview of resources and opportunities. Activities on the “cycling distance”, good opportunities for innovators and entrepreneurs to find support are some of the strengths, while increased coordination between actors is an example of a future opportunity. This shows the work done by Jasna Pocek and Christin Scheller of the Sten K. Johnson Centre for Entrepreneurship in 2021.

OPSI: Future by Lund tests OECD's new tools

With a rapidly changing society, public organizations may need to equip themselves — and one way is to develop their capacity for innovation. Within the OECD there is a group working on innovations for the public sector. They have developed a tool called the OPSI Portfolio Exploration Tool - which gives businesses a tool to work strategically with innovation portfolios. Starting in 2020, Future by Lund has worked with the OPSI team — at the same time OPSI uses the experience gained from Future by Lund to develop the tool.

Natsam spreads the ability to change

Six state-funded innovation platforms were established in Sweden — and Future by Lund is one of them. The goal of the platforms is to create attractive and sustainable communities that, through innovation and adaptability, are able to face the future. In order to increase the pace of spreading the ability to change throughout Sweden, the different cities are collaborating in the NATSAM project — National Collaboration.

NIDD: Innovation districts to make talent thrive

Future by Lund, together with Danish Lyngby-Taarbæk Vidensby, has received support from Interreg to carry out a preliminary project investigating how to create the Nordic innovation district of the future. In the Nordic region, the potential market for innovations is relatively small, but there can still be advantages — such as the short distances, the high level of trust between the players and the existence of a strong welfare state at the core. In the mission, the innovation environments of both cities will be scrutinized.

Innovation Management

How can you make good systematic collaboration on something as unpredictable as innovations? In 2017, some key players in sustainable urban development will meet in Lund and discuss how to build a new prototype for innovation management. By the end of 2017, Future by Lund can start testing a model of its own - which will also be useful in other sustainable cities.
