Innovation means more than technical solutions. Future by Lund with partners explore how to integrate value-driven perspectives with innovation and develop methods that promote this.

Vad?

How can we be better at incorporating human rights, the new UN resolution Pact for the Future, Existential Sustainability and Internal Development into innovation efforts? By integrating these perspectives already into the design work, we can create sustainable innovations and solutions that involve many. We develop projects, models and methods that can support innovation based on values and existential perspectives.

Varför?

Innovation means more than technical solutions. Future by Lund and its partners want to integrate value-driven perspectives with innovation and develop methods that promote this. We see it as a necessary step to be able to work on innovation that promotes sustainable development and to solve complex societal challenges. In this way, we can raise other issues, gain new perspectives and perhaps also create a deeper imprint that takes into account the needs, conditions and motivations of different individuals and groups.

Unexpected — arts and science innovation forum 2025

Unexpected is a forum that approaches innovation in a different way, and in 2023 the first event was held. On June 4, 2025, Unexpected returns to Mejeriet in Lund. This is an opportunity when art, science, business, creative industries and philosophy come together to shape the future. The aim is to enable stakeholders to build an inclusive innovation ecosystem guided by both ethics and aesthetics, and where the cultural and creative sectors and industries are shown their capacity to play a leading role in addressing complex societal challenges.

A Reconnaissance on the Future of Journalism

Greater focus on analysing, bringing to life and explaining news and increased use of new technologies — such as AI to create new content. These are some of the conclusions of the lecture What does the future of journalism look like? held at Lund University in the spring of 2024.

Lund — a place of equal value

Using human rights as a starting point not only affects the work of municipalities so that people are better off, but it can also promote the emergence of innovations that people want to use. This is according to Morten Kjaerum, director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute in Lund.

Mobility with people at the heart

Future by Lund held a membership meeting at Trivector Traffic in 2023 on the combination of human rights and mobility in the theme “Human centred mobility in the Human Rights city of Lund”. By combining areas of expertise with each other, FBL hopes to find deeper common thinking around innovative solutions to different societal challenges.

Existential sustainability: Can cultural and creative industries make us understand societal challenges?

Which of Agenda 2030's 17 sustainability goals includes the deeply human need for art, creativity and culture? During a workshop at the Faculty of Arts, Magali Ljungar-Chapelon, an artistic researcher in digital design, would try to fit work with different art forms among the global goals, but did not find a goal that she felt was appropriate. The solution was to create our own goal, existential sustainability. The hope is that culture and creative industries can contribute to solving our major societal challenges.

IPA: Green Transition Using Holistic Thinking

Working together on individual projects can be a great way for different actors to contribute to the transformation of the city. But perhaps there would be more impact if we shifted our focus from one project at a time to working more on the whole with innovation portfolios instead? In the newly launched Innovation Portfolio Approach (IPA) project, Future by Lund cooperates with a cultural organisation in Romania and a university in the Netherlands. The aim of the project is to strengthen the capacity of intermediaries working with the cultural and creative sectors to contribute to green transition based on existential sustainability.
