CoPilot: Lund one of the EU's selected pilot cities

In Lund, intensive work on climate solutions is ongoing. Lund is one of 100 European cities selected by the EU to lead the way in the climate transition to become climate neutral by 2030. Now it is also clear that Lund's work is enhanced by the fact that the city has been selected as one of the EU's pilot cities because the city is innovative, cooperates with other actors in and outside Lund and intends to spread developed solutions to more cities around Europe.

In January 2024, it became clear that Lund, Malmö, Helsingborg and Gävle are selected as some of the 26 new cities in the European programme Pilot Cities. The pilot cities programme now consists of a total of 79 cities working to make way for ground-breaking climate action. The pilot cities will serve as innovation hubs to test solutions for the rapid phase-out of fossil fuels.

The EU is providing cities with a total of almost €15 million in funding and support from NetZeroCities to jointly launch over the next two years 22 pilot activities to test and implement systemic and locally designed innovative actions across a wide range of topics, from energy efficiency and energy transition to civic engagement and improved governance models.

“The fact that Lund Municipality has been designated as a pilot city by the EU is an honour but also associated with a great responsibility. This is another important injection in our work towards becoming a climate-neutral city,” says Anders Almgren, Chairman of the Municipal Board, Lund Municipality in the Net Zero Cities press release.

The pilot cities will also receive direct support from urban experts and have the opportunity to learn from other cities during the two-year program. The results and lessons learned from the work of the pilot cities will in turn be shared with the non-pilot cities selected to participate in a partnership programme, multiplying the impact of the programme on European cities' efforts to become climate-neutral.

“By being a pilot city, we can further accelerate our climate work. We look forward to being inspired by others and inspiring them in return. In Lund, the city, citizens and other stakeholders are committed to climate neutrality by 2030, and to achieve this we must work together,” says Jon Andersson, Head of Sustainability in Lund Municipality.

Future by Lund will be a partner in the project and contribute through knowledge within the portfolio approach.
