Lund Municipality, Sensative: Stencrussen counts visitors with sensors

How many people stay at Stenkrossen's premises? Starting in 2022, the Department of Culture and Leisure and the Lunds Company Sensative are investigating in an innovation project how they can use sensors to measure how many people use the premises. In this way, the municipality receives important statistics that can create opportunities to ensure that the premises are used in the best way.

Stencrussen is a municipal business that has grown organically since its inception in 2013. It has evolved to become a unique support model for projects and activities in the fields of art, culture and innovation and, in addition, two stages for public activities.

In the past, it has been difficult for the Culture and Leisure Administration to know how many visitors Stencrussen has and what days and times the visitor pressure is highest. Therefore, the lund-based company Sensative is now testing to measure how many people pass by on their way in or out.

- We have installed sensors at the two entrances to measure how many people are in the property. They report in every fifteen minutes. In this way, you can see almost in real time how many people have gone out and into the property — without knowing who is there, so there will be no privacy problem, says Fredrik Westman at Sensative.

In the first months that the sensors have been in place, 4917 passages can be read at one entrance and 2198 at the other.

- This is great! The stone crusher is a large house of almost 2000 square meters, and there are very diverse activities in the premises. Now, with the help of sensors, we can get an idea of how many people are moving here,” says Mikael Enander, Head of Unit at the Swedish Culture and Leisure Administration. We hope that the sensors will remain in place so that we can compare each year but also see which periods and days of the week there are most people in the house so that we could influence so that the activity is spread out more.

The project to measure visitors to Stenrosssen started in early March 2022.
