Smart Villages: Road status in rural areas

With the help of a specially equipped mobile phone, it is possible to get an image of the status of the roads and this is tested in Helsingborg and Stockholm, among others. In Veberöd, a project will be carried out in 2022 to see how this works in rural areas.

No matter which vehicle you drive, it is annoying and sometimes dangerous with injuries in the road such as potholes or impact holes. Creating an overview of damage throughout the road network has so far been an extensive manual effort. At the moment, attempts are underway in Helsingborg, Stockholm and Veberöd, for example, to document road damage in a much less time-consuming way. A smartphone equipped with Universes app for data collection is put in the front window of a car. After that, the images are assessed using AI.

In Veberöd, Smarta Byar has driven around almost all the streets in the village and collected data via a mobile phone in the front window, and in this way the system is also being tested in rural areas. The first win with this is already clear — it took a few days to collect data on almost the entire village instead of several weeks. The result is shown in a road map, but in the future Smarta Byar hopes to show the result of road status measurement in its own digital twin.
