IoT & Society is about developing new services and products using IoT technology. Sensors can help provide better control over various systems and provide a basis for decision-making. We focus on the ability to measure, understand, and act, as well as presenting the results to decision-makers, companies, and citizens alike.

Future by Lund has established testbeds aimed at removing barriers and offering technologies, systems, and processes that range from physical infrastructure to digital information platforms for data sharing. Key aspects include openness, ensuring that a digital platform can communicate and exchange information with other systems in a standardized way.

DynaCITY: Project focuses on citizen influence in urban processes

A new European project has been granted funding to create a collaborative and data-driven process that empowers citizens to participate more in urban planning. The project involves 24 European partners with diverse perspectives on the field. As part of this, Veberöd and Lund will be connected through a collaborative system of digital twins. This is being carried out by Smarta byar, Sensative, Lunds kommun, and Future by Lund, who have for several years used Veberöd as a testbed for new digital solutions. In Veberöd, the DynaCITY project is envisioned to serve as an incubator for smart city innovations where ideas, sensors, and citizen-driven initiatives can be quickly implemented and tested in a controlled, human environment.

National initiative for smart, connected communities takes shape in Veberöd

For several years, Veberöd has served as a pilot and testing ground for the digitalization of a community through smart technology and IoT, notably within several projects led by Future by Lund. The Smarta Byar concept—combining locally tested technology, a strong sense of community, and rapid innovation—has now generated so much interest from IoT Sverige and Region Skåne that they are investing in a national initiative for smart, connected communities based in Skåne, which may eventually serve as a model for all of Sweden.

LOSC - Large project connecting traffic flows is carried out in Lund

Lund Municipality is granted SEK 5.9 million from Vinnova to implement the project Lund Open Sensing City. Lund Open Sensing City will create an open test bed for the future real-time controlled society where people, organizations, infrastructure and sensor systems work together to create a sustainable environment with high quality of life.

SOM II: Smart Public Environments

Imagine if the bin could tell you when it's full, if you could sit at home and see if the vegetables in the grow plot need watering, or if city planners could easily follow which paths cyclists prefer. This and much more was investigated in Smart Public Environments II (SOM II) through connected sensors in a free and open network in Lund and Malmö. The project aimed to find the benefits of new smart technologies in municipal operations and public environments and to implement innovative solutions to the challenges that exist. Another goal was to find opportunities to test entrepreneurs and companies' innovative solutions to public operations. Within the project, more than twenty sub-projects were carried out and a new agile project implementation model was tested with very good results.

OCSN - Open City Sensor Network

In the spring of 2017, Lund installed a wireless LoRa network that allowed free experimentation with sensors and the collection of environmental data. The network was one of the first free and open communication networks for IoT and sensor solutions, and everyone from sensor-interested individuals and students to companies at a pre-commercial stage could freely try innovative solutions in Lund's own Internet of Things.

FLOW brings new knowledge about connected traffic

In order to be able to plan, expand and manage society, data is needed, among other things, on which roads different road users choose. The same data, if it could be reported in real time, could make it easier for road users to choose the fastest route and provide the municipality with quick information on traffic problems. The FLOW project will explore how to collect data using sensor technology and then connect the data on a digital platform.

LOSC, sub-project: Sony's smart office system becomes living lab at IKDC

In autumn 2020, Nimway — Sony's smart office system — will be installed at the Ingvar Kamprad Design Centre at LTH. The system is intended to be used partly as the office system it is, but also as a platform for various research projects at IKDC. By connecting different sensors, completely new solutions can be created by the creative students. The collaboration is part of the large flow and mobility project Lund Open Sensing City.

Lund Municipality: The connected football field provides strength at grassroots level

At Linero in Lund, a way was tried to make the grass on the football field more durable and at the same time less demanding on water than normal. The municipality of Lund is carrying out a project in which biochar was dug into an existing plot with natural grass. In order to be able to see how much less water the new kind of football field needs, the municipality has now also placed moisture sensors in the ground.
